Photos and a Few Thoughts, From Kuwait.

Thanksgiving.
Enjoyed celebrating Thanksgiving with some of my sweet, fun colleagues.
Good people, good food and games = smiles.

Two Monthly Book clubs.
Participating in two clubs gets me reading books I may not otherwise choose to read on my own.

My apartment building's (I can go in my slippers!), last month's, book club read: City of Lies: Sex, Death, and the Search for Truth in Tehran. Yeah, I only made it half way. That was enough of those true stories for me.

This month's read: And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. I know, we DO read a wide range of books. I've never read an Agatha Christie book.
Heading to the in-my-apartment-building book club.

In the other club, last month, we read The Paradise Guest House, a novel that takes place in Bali, Indonesia. This month: The Snow Child by Ivey Eowyn.
Of course we eat at both meetings.

The Novelty of Running.
I'm still enjoying running. It still feels novel and like a major accomplishment. But, my sensitive knee, has been limiting me.

In November, I ran my first 10K.

Really Random Stuff.
I am not creative enough to even try to tie this stuff together.
Tim Horton's now sets up a stand at our school every Thursday morning, before school!
I snapped this, from my window, at the end of September.
January 8th. I'm not thrilled.
Wherever they are, I love sunsets.

My school has an amazing canteen.
"I say cafeteria, you say canteen."
I eat these stuffed grape leaves a lot!

Arabic.
This, beautiful, language is Arabic!
Graduation from another class.  I am still a beginning beginner though.
(You just don't need to see me that up close, again!)
How awesome is this. I haven't made the purchase, yet, though. Hmm...

Christmas.
Got to do a small service project with friends. The note below is in, beautiful, Sinhalese. A language spoken in Sri Lanka.
The things that amuse me. The tree in my classroom.

My adorable, not-so-secret, admirer.

Wrapping it Up.
I wish I was at Pizza Express now.
I ♥️ food pictures.

I'm Actually here: at the new Starbuck's, in my neighborhood.
Next up: Home for the Holidays. Nebraska.

It's E Break

Language Learning
I started a Primer Arabic class. It's the class before Beginners. Lol. So, I got my first back to front book, wrote my notes from right to left, learned 5 letters and 2 phrases including their appropriate replies. I'm taking the classes at the AWARE, Advocates for Western Arab Relations, center. I also picked up this watercolor, on a whim.
#firstdaymomento
We meet once a week for 6 weeks, but not this week.

Staycation
It's E break or Eid. There are a few Eids, this one is Eid Al-Adha and it is a remembering/ celebrating of Abraham's willingness to, and God's provision of, a sacrifice.  I hear, it's one of the most important religious holidays.

I'm still feeling good about not going anywhere for break. I didn't feel like going anywhere else right now. I'm tired and I already booked my Budapest and Prague trip for December. Most of the other new teachers are having fun in Dubai, right now, though.

New Things
Food
Halloumi, cheese you can grill, is awesome. Halloumi, hummus and falafel are on my current food favs list. Yogurt, too. Thick, plain yogurt is common and inexpensive here. Tried Hawala, but it is not on that list.

Sometimes I just buy things because they seem weird.
Hair
I got my first hair cut in Kuwait. It's hard for me to say what I want ina  hair cut anywhere, so to someone who speaks broken English, or probably more accurately just English from an Asian country, it's even more difficult. Long story short, it's fine, it's just hair.

There is an upscale salon close to our apartment that is 20 KD for a haircut, which is 70 dollars. Most of the new teachers have just went there. Many have said that's about what they pay in the states. Well, I go to the cheap haircutting chains and pay around 15 dollars, so to me it seems steep to spend that much on my hair.  I went somewhere else and paid 3 KD. Though I paid 2 KD for a taxi ride and 1 KD for a tip.  All and all, I paid 6 KD, or 21 dollars (each Kuwaiti Dinar is worth $3.50).

Recycling
It's ironic because I don't know of anywhere I can take things to be recycled, but I visited this park made of recycled stuff.
Tree love. My hometown is the Sandhill crane capital of the world, says one sign.
But, maybe this is a flamingo. Which would make more sense, for Kuwait.

Movie theater, mini soda cans, and a Toll House cafe.

Things I miss
Walking
Before I came, I was worried of feeling isolated because the norm for me is to go places alone and to walk outside... alone. Well I can go places alone and I don't feel too isolated because I can schedule a driver, or call one and they'll pick me up in 20 minutes. But, I do miss my walks! It's not like you can't walk to places but, you walk on garbage sprinkled sand (there are no sidewalks in our neighborhood), I get stared at and undoubtedly one of the many clusters of foreign men will try to talk to me. I've also been hearing safety warnings from different taxi drivers. Not to mention it is still over 100 degrees every day. :(

Maybe I'll get a treadmill. It won't be the same, but it would be something. If I wait, I can buy a cheap one from a teacher who is leaving.

Fall
I miss trees and grass and fresh cool air. And I know it's fall, my favorite time of the year, in much of the world right now. Technically it is fall here, too.

Fall in Kuwait does not look like this.

Or this.
These sum up my fall, so far.

School
School has been in session for 23 days.
After break, there will be 47.5 more school days until Christmas break (minus an in-service and parent teacher conferences). Kind of wish I hadn't figured that out. Those are kind of depressing numbers.

We Like Each Other
I still spend too much time waiting for my class to get quiet, but we like each other, we have fun and we learn stuff.

One month in Kuwait

When in Rome
I went on a Grand Mosque tour. We had to wear a head covering, long skirt and long sleeved shirt. I was dressed like I normally dress (capris and a tee), so I needed to cover with an abaya (long black covering) and a hijab (head scarf). They had free ones available for tour go-ers to borrow.
Very sweet, cute, sincere man explained Islam to us from his point of view.
THIS is What I'm Talking About
Then we went to the towers.  I was hoping to eat lunch in the rotating cafe in the top of one of the towers, but it was still closed for renovation. So, we took pictures and ate lunch on the waterfront (at Chili's- my first time eating American food at a restaurant here.)

We also got a personal car tour by another teacher. By the end of the day I was feeling like I'm actually seeing Kuwait now!
Also returned to Al Kout mall to buy groceries and eat dinner this week.
We ate at an Iranian restaurant. Huge pieces of bread and teeny strong cups of tea, at the end.
BTW- feta cheese and soda are cheap here. Feta is only $1.80 for 18 oz. and a can of sodas is less than $0.50, even at convenient stores. I also discovered store bought fatayer (fa-thai-ya) that I mentioned a week back. Not as good as the stone oven-baked version, but I regular shopping item nonetheless. Also cheap- about $0.50 each.
School Stuff
2 weeks into school and we had a parent only Open House. I had to give two, 15 minute presentations. I was a bit nervous beforehand but it was fun. Less than half of my parents showed up but I have met most of them by now.

I had 2 new students this week but I'm still waiting for 2 more.
Exploration
So happy to say I have explored my area a bit more. I can now add Starbucks, Lebanese and Thai food to my repertoire.

Going to a new (to me) shopping mall today. Marina mall . Planning to see my first movie in a theater here.

Can't wait for the weather to cool down a bit so I can stroll the corniche.

Corniche- a road (in this case they refer to the walking trail) running along the coast.

Next Weeks Goals
- Planning to start Arabic lessons next Saturday. They will be 2 hours a week for 6 weeks.
- Another mall to want to visit, the 360 mall.
- Want to walk to the gulf from my house, at least once.

I did not meet my last week goal to exercise... full stop.

Up and Coming Breaks
We have a week off of school in October but I can't leave the country until I get my civil ID, so I may just get to know Kuwait better, which would be okay too.

But, I bought my ticket to BUDAPEST for Christmas break.
Bridge walks, trolley views, subway pastries and goulash- here I come.
Christmas Market, mulled wine and outside ice skating- HERE I COME.
